Concept

“The whole is more than the sum of its parts”

Two group rooms each are combined to a unit. These four units provide, together with the hallway, a spatial structure. A continuum that forms, in a pedagogical sense, an adventurous and educational landscape for the little ones. Each group room is a house, identity-forming, inviting and defining at the same time. The gallery is an added value for strengthening the body awareness.

In the terms of Reggio pedagogy, the space must be multifunctional. It becomes a place of retreat, but also wants to be conquered. The area in the hallway will be discovered, because that’s where the walls “speak” and the corners “can be played with”. All implementations are supposed to encourage children to engage with the environment in a variety of ways.

The houses are open to the garden. The varied spatial structure, the different roof pitches create the heterogeneity of a small-scale development and strengthen the individuality of the residents.

Architecture

The displacement and rotation of the buildings, is an effective way to create a sense of variety and interest within the outdoor environment. By offering different perspectives of the garden, children are encouraged to explore and engage with the space, more dynamically.

The playground and the softscape reserved for children, is located on the east side. It is a green space spanning north-south and providing all the various islands and different playgrounds for the children. Meanwhile, to the west the structure itself forms a barrier to the street and its hazards.

The timber frame construction is consistently implemented in a modular system. The clusters are the same, the dimensions are in an economic grid. All facades are clad in rear-ventilated larch wood slats to ensure a warm and cozy atmosphere.
