MORRO CASTLE
Our Scope
– Architectural Design and Service
Design
Morro Castle was built in the very early 1900s near the well-known Fort Charlotte, in Nassau, Bahamas. It has been abandoned for decades, even burned down at some point and now calls for renovation. Our team was given the challenging opportunity of turning this heritage from a ruin into a music house by embedding a new structure while preserving the perimeter walls of the abandoned building. The roof of the new music hall in the shape of a square, follows the form of the previous roof of Morro castle, thus embracing the spirit of the old castle. The materials of the facades and roof of the newly embedded structure allude to music by resembling classical musical instruments. Brass is a robust material that also has high reflective properties and therefore would be suitable for construction in the Bahamian climate. The interior of the performance hall is cladded with wood panels which create perfect acoustics for the specific use of that room.
